Boom. Headshot :)
You know what's been missing from Righteous? An updated photo of me! :) Shot with a Canon 5D and 50 F1.4 lens in an informal meeting area of the Best Buy Corporate Campus. This is one of the rare photos on this blog that's (1) Shot by my wife, Natalie Wetjen. And (2), digitally modified with the blueing. I'm a truest, so future retro photos won't be digitally altered. Happy 2012.

 Easter 2010
Outside of an occasional gig or helping Natalie, its been almost a year since I picked up a camera for fun. That changed last weekend when my parents invited us to Easter lunch. In this shot, my father stands in the kitchen carving and serving a ham roast. Light from two windows illuminates his hands as steam slowly rises and swirls around the meat. Here's the unprocessed original image straight from the camera RAW. Spence

 Super 8
Taking a break from retro photos for a few posts. This is a closeup photo of a classic Super 8 hand held camcorder. These cameras were most popular from the late 60's to the early 80's. While this particular model of camera has gone out of favor, the Super 8 film format is still used today in professional circles. This camera has a simple elegance to it. Its a classic design thats expressed through thin lines, polished silver, rich black leather and texture. Contrast this with modern electronics like the Apple 3G iPhone. Black, glossy enamel finish, polished silver trim, no discernible texture. Interesting. ...s

 Family
A portrait of my parents while they showed us around a forested area near their rural home in East Bethel Minnesota, USA.In a previous post I mentioned getting closer to authentic skin tones while shooting with the gel. This is about the best I've managed yet. I like the warm highlights of the fall colors in the background contrast against the cool blue burns from the gel. The blue reciprocity failure in the top right corner of the shot is an interesting artifact. It reminds me of running a film negative through developer with a bit of tape covering part of the frame. Its little defects that make the photo for me. ...s

 Through the Woods 2
This shot was taken around the same time as the previous post. The major difference is that this shot has been white balanced. The gel enlarges the glow of the sun which in actually is about 1/3 that size. In this shot I like the brilliance of the sun set against the cool browns and greens of the sky and tree. The blue streak in the lower left third is a subtle reflection of light from the gel. ...s

 Through the Woods
Taken about an hour before sunset on Thanksgiving day, 2008. I feel this shot is a beautiful contrast of warm sunset colors and a cool glare of light reflecting off the gel. I would usually white balance but I liked the shot as is out of the camera. This photo feels like its about month late (think Halloween). ...s
